Heavy Rain Washes Out Memorial Day Activities

The unofficial start to summer got off to a soggy start on Sunday as heavy rain washed out many Memorial Day festivities. 

Temperatures around the region at noon were about 20 degrees colder than they were on Saturday. 

Much of the region, including New York City, Nassau County, northeastern New Jersey and the Jersey Shore were under a flash flood watch Sunday morning, but the National Weather Service said the flood threat had passed by 10 a.m. 

As much as 4 inches of rain fell in some places along the Jersey Shore, Storm Team 4 said. 

A ground stoppage was in effect at Newark Airport until 10:30 a.m. due to rain, fog and mist, the FAA said.

The rain forced the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach to cancel on Sunday. 

Also canceled were aerial events for Fleet Week and the Freedom Run, officials said. 

The Log Jam Music Festival in Patchogue was also canceled. 

The rain was expected to taper off to lighter showers in the afternoon with clouds lingering on Memorial Day. But some sunshine is expected Monday afternoon with temperatures rebounding into the 70s.
